PAX West 2019

4 09 2019

At this years Penny Arcade Expo (now called PAX West instead of PAX Prime), I was able to check out all the new games and tech coming out in the next year. This year, I was able to try out the Stadia, I played Mortal Kombat 11 on a phone and the graphics looked great and the response time from the controller felt normal. I hope they do what they can promise, I am still reminded on OnLive and hope they don’t go down the same path.

The most common gaming accessory being shown off at the show was racing equipment, some of the major hardware suppliers were showing off the latest racing games you can play in a simulated race car.

One of the most popular games being shown were Borderlands 3, I was unable to play this game because the line was always capped.

Other games shown were Teppen, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy Online, Links Awakening, Predator: Hunting Grounds, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Kerbal Space Program 2, and there was plenty of indie games in the Indie MegaBooth.

The eSports area had plenty of tournaments going on, there was a US Army Call of Duty Tournament for $5K, and there was a Rocket League tournament for $5K.

They also moved the Table top to the Regency and turned the basement to console freeplay. But, overall it was a fun experience and look forward to the next one.

Pax Prime 2017 Highlights

27 09 2017

Another year of Pax Prime at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle Washington. The line to get in was quite odd, but a little  improvement. Instead of waiting to get in from the back of the convention, they made people wait in the overpass next door, which confused alot of people. but if you had waited an hour after it opened, you did not have to worry about any line at all to get in.

This year, there were more VR showcases, such a Skyrim VR in the Bethesda booth, a bunch of Playstation VR games (sparc?), and Dell was showing their new VR set.

Another theme I noticed was that there were plenty of “Ride the ___ and take a picture” themes at most of the booths. Mostly dinosaurs or dragons.

Speaking of dragons, the Dungeons and Dragons crew aka Wizards of the Coast was a no show this year which disappointed some people.

The swag this year was quite an improvement to over years, more T-Shirts, hats, and mouse-pads were given out to the attendees who checked out the latest games. Also, if you traveled a block away form the event, you can find a Monster Energy truck giving away their new soda, and Nissin was giving away cases of their Cup o’ Noodles. In the area, I was lucky enough to run into the creators of the show and Penny Arcade comic (Tycho and Gabe). They were cool enough to sign my badge.

There were also plenty of Indie games you can buy, this year I got the latest Shovel Knight, and Broken age from the Limited Indie Run booth. Also, I got the Hunted Halloween 86 for the NES (yes, the original), the sequel to the one they made last year, which was quite fun. Other indie games had an impact this year, Nintendo has their Nindies area, after waiting in line for a couple hours, you get to play all the new indie games coming to the Switch in the next year and get to talk to the Develpers who made this. I was able to play to the next Shovel Knight: King of Cards, Floor Kids – a dance off game, Sausage Sports Club – A four player mini games  match, Super Meat Boy Forever – Super Meat Buy Sequel, they announced  No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again, but did not show it off at the area.

Overall, this was a fun show, but drains the life out of you if you wait in the lines. Next year, the convention center should have expended a large mount of square footage, I wonder what the layout will be…

Spin Attack! and PAX Prime is Next Week

27 08 2017

Its been a while since I last posted. I wanted to concentrate more on the mechanics of the game. I added a new fight ability, a spin attack.  Alpha-1 spreads its arms allowing Anna to spin and knockout enemies.

On a side note, I will be at PAX Prime next weekend. If anyone wants to meet up PM me on Twitter or Facebook.

A Day at PAX 2016

5 09 2016

Over the past weekend I was able to go to the Washington State Convention Center for the annual Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) where thousands of gamers get to see the latest games coming out for the next year.

This year, most of the top companies are pushing VR for their latest projects. Sony has a slew of VR games to be ready when the VR headset becomes available. Also PAX had a floor a the Westin hotel dedicated to VR gaming including a section for Indie VR devs to how off their work.  Also adult swim showed off some new VR games, such as the new Rick and Morty VR game.

The new south park game was shown at the show, it satirized the Oculus Rft by creating a smell-o-vision headset called the Nosulus Rift. Whenever a character farts in the game, the players would “experience” the smell in real-time.

There were also plenty of new games to check out, such as the new Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Heavy Metal Machines,  Dishonored 2, Dawn of War III, and others.

For ad spaces, there were Final Fantasy themed Uber cars, there was a Tank down the street of the convention center to promote World of Tanks.

Another thing I found cool was a new Nintendo game for the classic NES system (with original NES cart!). They told me that they coded in assembly just like the classics. Pretty fun game, they already have a sequel that got funding on kickstarter

WP_20160905_12_38_47_Pro

Getting gaming swag was kind of meh, there were few retailers, such as Jinx, Loot Crate, and Pink Gorilla. On the plus side there were some good hardware sellers, I got a nice SSD for ~$80 on the showroom floor. Free swag that you’d normally get in previous shows were kind of absent. This year, I did get a couple of free shirts. Others you had to wait in line for several hours to play a game or fill out surveys/give personal info to get a free item.

One thing I noticed was quite odd is placing the gaming arenas in the same spaces as the retail spots in the past. I was only able to go to the convention for one day. It would have been better to go multiple days to get to check out more games and the sights due to the geographic location of all of the activities (in a couple mile radius). Hopefully next year when the convention expands in size we can get better placement of things to check out.

Have any cool pics or stories, feel free to share in the comments.
